May 3 to 9: Anxiety and Depression Awareness Week--Because it's not "all in our heads" #MHActNow

May 3 to 9 is National Anxiety and Depression Awareness Week and I think it's fitting that I talk about these things because I actually suffer from them--and it would be nice to try to open up our minds to the reality of these conditions.

You see, here's the thing: A lot of people, especially in this country, often think that these conditions are just "all in the head"; that they're not "real"; that they're "drama lang". Sure, it might look that way at times, but the truth is so much different from that.

Let me tell you a little something about these conditions. Look at the two circles below.

So, the first circle you see is all about Anxiety. Anxiety is so terrible that you get to have all these thoughts in your mind--all at the same time. I'll give you an example:
1. You think about what you'll tell your boyfriend when you see him later; as in you rehearse in your head the sentences you want to say.
2. You think about what your cats have in mind.
3. You think about which photo you're going to upload on Instagram.
4. You think about something that hurt you a while ago.
5. You think about something that hurt you ages ago.
6. You think about how hot it is, or about maybe doing something wrong at work, or about not getting paid or losing money (even when there's no basis),about seeing people you hate, about hearing their names, about other stuff....
...and so on and so forth.
And all these things are in your head ALL AT THE SAME TIME. So, just imagine how that feels. And imagine how it would feel when something doesn't happen according to what you have in mind--like scheduling conflicts, or things that would just pop up. (I actually do like surprises when they're good but when things kind of disrupt my schedule, and these things are not those "happy birthday surprises" or whatever, they could really make me cringe)

It's so, so, so not easy. And people can say stuff like, "Oh, it's all in your head, lalala. Oh, there's no basis to that". YES, WE DO KNOW THAT. I do know that. And that's the thing--Anxiety plays with your mind like that. It makes you so fearful. It makes you feel like you're not yourself anymore and you have no idea what happens next.

On the other hand, the second circle is an illustration of how Depression feels like. It makes you feel empty. It drains you of any energy you have and literally makes you not want to stand up from bed. It makes you want to cry for no reason at all--or for all the reasons in the world.

Imagine going back and forth between these two. It's so exhausting. It's so exhausting but you have to fight it. It's so exhausting but you still have to live your life because it's all you have.

I think I started having Depression at age 4 or 5. I remember packing my bags at that age, actually wanting to leave home. I remember feeling like, "this isn't what I want". (Told you, I grew up early) And, over time, it just grew worse. And the worst part is that in a family who believes in traditions, who are you know, full of norms and all that, it's hard to make them understand that it's something that you do not want to happen--and yet it happens.

The anxiety also worsened over time. There were times (especially back in college) when I just wouldn't be able to sleep; times when I'd cry myself to death, and even hurt myself. Even now, there are days when I couldn't help but feel like escaping; like I just want it all to end because it's so, so, so exhausting. And it is an everyday battle.

The pain is physical, too. Your chest tightens, you feel like you're literally gonna die. Your head aches, you get flushes, your blood boils, you feel so bad. You don't want to hear sounds; you don't wanna hear any noise. You want the world to be quiet. You want to have peace.

For years, I really, really wanted to die. There would be times when I'd take more medicine than I could handle because I couldn't stand the pain anymore. But, I'm still here--still fighting.

Some 3 years ago, I had a breakdown, was brought to the hospital and all that. My mom said didn't believe that there's "something wrong with me", even though she almost always said that while I was growing up; that I wasn't normal, etc. It also hurt when you'd hear things like, "Oh, this didn't happen", or "Oh your memory's wrong". It's about a refusal to get help, because there's a stigma that when you have these conditions, you're "INSANE". And I guess, I understand why it's hard for her to accept that so eventually, I really had to leave home. It's toxic. A house isn't always a home. Your family won't always be there for you; won't always accept you--sad, but true.

No, I didn't write this to get pity or whatever. And it's also not because I want to put the blame on my family. One thing that most people don't understand is that it's really not the fault of the people around you--and it's not your fault, too. But, that shouldn't become a reason for people to think that "it's all in your head". I wrote this because I want to help some people understand that hey, this happens.

We celebrate people with Cancer, right? We know it's not their fault. So, why can't we celebrate people who actually try to fight their mental illnesses, too? Just because someone has a mental condition doesn't mean that he's crazy; that he's making it all up. Just because we can't see the symptoms doesn't mean it isn't real. Just because you can't feel the pain doesn't mean that it isn't there.

On another note, it's sad that there's no Mental Health Bill in the Philippines--see how stigmatized these conditions are? But we can try to change things.

This week is just one week to try to understand Anxiety and Depression, but it's always more than that. For us who suffer from these conditions, and those who suffer other mental conditions, it's an everyday battle. All we need is a little bit of your understanding. All we need is acceptance.

Because really, that matters a lot. It really does.

Things get worse when she's paired up with him on a major project. Will she survive dream-turned-nightmare art camp, or will she go running back home, the very place she wanted to escape in the first place?

Masabi kaya nila sa isa’t isa ang katagang “I’LL KEEP ON LOVING YOU ALL MY LIFE”?

Never Too Late by Jen C. Suguitan

When Cass goes to a trip to Corregidor, she thinks that it’s the key to finding closure over her sister's death. But things change when she gets mixed up with the wrong tour group where she meets Noah, a budding filmmaker and photographer who wants to relive his grandfather’s war stories through the tour.

As they explore the historic island together, will Cass and Noah find what they are looking for? Or will they find something more, like a chance to fall in love, too?

Second Sight to Forever by Racquel Sarah A. Castro

Sasha Salazar, a passionate A-Girls dancer, met her ‘crush-at-first-sight’ in the stairway of Escuela de Rojo. She ignored him because she was still into Norman Gil. The second sight at the EDR’s rooftop began the daily rooftop moments (RTMs) of Sasha with the famous basketball varsity player, Joshua Bonifacio. Take a glimpse on how their relationship bloomed as they both found out the spy.

After the Moment by Six de los Reyes

Under the most normal of circumstances, Aria de Luna could never imagine herself kissing the boy she has always considered to be miles and miles out of her league. She’s known as their year’s resident emo-girl and she plays the part flawlessly with her violet hair, scuffed boots, and her alleged angst from living under the shadow of her over-achieving, perfect, older sister. Meanwhile, Kristoffer Li is living the perfect life. He’s popular, next year’s captain of the basketball team, attractive, if maybe a little too frowny for people’s liking, but he looks very pretty on a chocolate-milk drink carton.

So it is only under the most unusual circumstance that Kris shows up at the Arts and Culture Festival Aria has been looking forward to all year. But does a morning of awkward conversations, an afternoon of provoking discussions, and a moment under the moonlight really change three years of oblivious coexistence? Or will everything go back to the way it was after the moment?

When a KISS Falls by Kaye Dee

Do you know someone tagged as a KISS?

Nastasha and Stefano are both aware of the uncanny relationship they have as best friends. Nash has always been the KISS or knight-in-shining skirt - always so protective of Stef. In her, Stef found a personal on-call heroine. Stef, on the other hand, is often seen as vain, weak and feminine, making him the perfect bully target. Until one day, Stef realizes it should be the other way around. It is time to switch their roles and be his best friend’s protector and defender. But being the strong-willed girl that she is, Nash just cannot deal away with her tough nature.

Will Stef prove his worth and fulfill the new role in their friendship? Will this be the bridge that can take their friendship into something more?

An excerpt of NEVER TOO LATE

Chapter 1: 8:03 AM, Manila to Corregidor
[4:30 AM:] Wake up!!! 7am sharp @Soleil Tours terminal! DON’T BE LATE THIS TIME!!!
[6:45 AM:] I am almost there. Where are you? Why aren’t you answering my calls?!?!
[7:01 AM:] YOU ARE LATE!! Where are you, Cass?
[7:15 AM:] Called Daisy, she isn’t picking up. Where are you, Cass?!
[7:16 AM:] I’m calling mom. You are soooo screwed.
[7:18 AM:] Ferry’s leaving at 8. Where the hell ARE YOUUUU?!
[7:21 AM:] This isn’t funny. You can’t make the ferry WAIT for YOU.
[7:36 AM:] Okay, talked to the tour staff, we’re leaving EXACTLY at 8. Where are you?
[7:48 AM:] Acknowledging that you got my messages would be NICE, Cass.
[7:53 AM:] This is why mom and dad never should’ve trusted you.
[7:57 AM:] Three minutes. Corregidor will still be fun without you. #sorrynotsorry
I scrolled past my sister’s other pesky messages as I handed my ticket stub to the woman behind the check-in counter. I only replied to Anj, my sister, once and that was to tell her that I was five minutes away from the terminal. Knowing Anj, I’d probably get a lecture for not checking my phone’s battery level before leaving. But it was Anj’s constant nagging that distracted me before from my preparations for the trip. Besides, my phone wouldn’t die on me if she hadn’t called me twelve times in a span of twenty minutes.

The Miao Cat Cafe Experience

Hello, darlings!

I feel like it's been forever since I last posted here but anyway, I just wanted to share our Miao Cat Cafe Experience!

So, we heard about this cat cafe a month or so ago, and being the Airulophiles that me and my guy are, we decided to check out the place. Take note that seating space in the cafe is limited, so it's bets to make a reservation first. Details will be posted below.

really pretty illustrations on the wall!

Anyway, upon arriving at the cafe, we were asked to sign a waiver and sanitize before dealing with the cats. You'd also be asked to read some rules as to how to deal with the cats in the cafe, which is good so the cats won't get freaked out.

Well, if you've been following me for a while now, you'd know that being around cats during meal times is nothing new to me, but it was still great to be around really cute cats, such as the ones you'll see in this post. What I also liked about the cafe is the fact that they do not only house cats with foreign breeds (they have Scottish Folds, Maine Coons, and British Shorthairs, amongst others), they also have Puspins, such as Kahel, a rescue cat. I always want people to be acquainted with Puspins so they'd understand that Puspins are lovable, too!

some of the cats

That's Kahel, one of the Puspins! He's super cute!

You also need to have some patience because some of the cats are usually asleep during daytime, but once they wake up, time will fly by so quickly because you'd enjoy seeing them play around! And of course, you can go ahead and pet them, too. You can't carry the cats, though, because it may disgruntle them, but you can always play with them--the cat toys around the place prove to be helpful, too!

The boyfriend playing with some of the cats! :D (check out my IG for another video)

The place is lovely. It has this homey vibe, and I like the aesthetics because it's super cat-friendly! The cats really have a lot of furniture to jump on, or climb on--which could definitely make them happy.

And of course, you'd also get to eat at the cafe! Door Fee is 300, inclusive of food and drinks. In case you get hungry during your stay, you can still order more, too. We had Pasta in Pesto Sauce, Blueberry Muffins, Blueberry Cupcakes (we do love our blueberries lol), and Choco Lava Cupcake, and Pink Lemonade. Their cakes are certainly to-die-for!

And, you can also go ahead and buy cute stuff from the store! They have cat toys, shirts designed with cats, pens, papers, notebooks, notepads, eye masks, wallets, cat headbands, and a whole lot more! I'm telling you, I had to restrain myself from buying more than I already did because those items are just sooooo lovely!
Cats Everywhere!!!!

So, yeah, that's it. If you are one big cat lover, check this place out--and maybe bring the other people in your life, too. This way, you can open up their minds to see how amazing cats could be!

That was fun!

Mina V. Esguerra - PLAYING AUTUMN - Book Review + GIVEWAY!

Hello, darlings! Welcome to the PLAYING AUTUMN tour stop on my blog, organized by BOOKISH DIARIES BOOK TOURS!
Today, I'll be reviewing Mina V. Esguerra's PLAYING AUTUMN, which is available on AMAZON for only $0.99 until March 28th! YAY!

PLAYING AUTUMN
by Mina V. Esguerra
Genre: New Adult, Contemporary

Amazon - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UOI69FS *It’s only $0.99 for the duration of the blog tour!*

Haley Reese is going back home to Houston and she's dreading this trip. She volunteers as a mentor to young musicians at an annual festival, and the longer she's been doing it, the more she feels like a fraud. It's been years since the web videos that made her sort-of famous first came out, and she hasn't done anything else to pursue the career in music she's always wanted. Things start looking up when she shares a plane ride with Oliver Cabrera, music prodigy, rock star, and the reason why she picked up an instrument in the first place.

Oliver Cabrera hasn't called any place "home" since he started touring professionally in his teens, but Houston is as close to it as any. He's also nearly broke, his career just about over. When he gets the invitation to mentor at the Breathe Music Festival again, he decides, what the hell, he should finally show up. He meets Haley, Hot Piano Girl herself, and finds her own fear of failure might be easier to fix than his own.

Playing Autumn was first released in 2013 in the Rock Gods of Romance ebook anthology. This is a revised, expanded, and steamier edition.

My Rating: 4/5 Stars

Holy mother of corn, this book is HOT.

I'm sorry, but that's the first thing that came to mind when I read this baby.

As a big fan of anything related to pop culture, and having watched reality competitions all my life, I thought that this was an interesting read. PLAYING AUTUMN has a colorful and refreshing set of characters that somehow make you feel involved right away. From the meet cute, to how the story progressed, this was a lovely thing to read.

Another thing that I liked about this was that I believe that it fits the kind of life that people live these days. You have these music camps. These reality shows. and of course, there's the fact that you could be famous simply by uploading a video somewhere online, provided that you have talent and charm--and both Haley and Oliver have that.

More so, I liked the fact that this book shows you the importance of dreams--of not being afraid to be yourself and not feeling the need to compromise; about why it's important to stay true to yourself ans stick up for who you are--while learning about things you don't know about in the process.

Romantically speaking, this was a winner! And oh my god, there's one part of the book that was just super hot, I was like...am I really reading something by a Filipino Author? And hell yes, I was--which only means that we could GO THERE, and make it classy and beautiful and romantic and all of those things.

I know that it's summer in the Philippines right now but I'm telling you: PLAYING AUTUMN is one of the best books you could read this season--especially if you need a little romance and sexiness--and music--in your life!

Mary Kubica - THE GOOD GIRL - Book Review + Theme Song

The Good Girl
Author: Mary Kubica
My Rating: 5/5 Stars

"I've been following her for the past few days. I know where she buys her groceries, where she has her dry cleaning done, where she works. I don't know the color of her eyes or what they look like when she's scared. But I will."

Born to a prominent Chicago judge and his stifled socialite wife, Mia Dennett moves against the grain as a young inner-city art teacher. One night, Mia enters a bar to meet her on-again, off-again boyfriend. But when he doesn't show, she unwisely leaves with an enigmatic stranger. With his smooth moves and modest wit, at first Colin Thatcher seems like a safe one-night stand. But following Colin home will turn out to be the worst mistake of Mia's life.

Colin's job was to abduct Mia as part of a wild extortion plot and deliver her to his employers. But the plan takes an unexpected turn when Colin suddenly decides to hide Mia in a secluded cabin in rural Minnesota, evading the police and his deadly superiors. Mia's mother, Eve, and detective Gabe Hoffman will stop at nothing to find them, but no one could have predicted the emotional entanglements that eventually cause this family's world to shatter.

An addictively suspenseful and tautly written thriller, The Good Girl is a propulsive debut that reveals how even in the perfect family, nothing is as it seems….

Oh god. Oh my god. Oh.my.god.

Sorry for the loss of words; I have a problem putting into words my feelings about books that I REALLY ENJOYED. Omg. I gave this one 5 Stars (which I rarely do nowadays) because I like mysteries and more often than not, I already know what's going to happen, but this one just made be gasp in the end because it turned out to be something else.

I'm a big fan of GONE GIRL, so when I saw this book's blurb, I was like...Okay, I have to read this. And I have to say, even in the first couple of pages, I was hooked already. The author has this way of gripping you and making you want to read every page. And this is her debut novel so I can't wait to read what she puts out next.

Anyway, the story is told in varying points of views of the characters. I really like that, given that I'm a fan of Jodi Picoult, and most of her works are that way, so that's also one of the reasons why I liked this book. This is the kind of story that will twist your mind and just probably leave your jaw hanging.

I don't want to say much because I don't want to spoil it for you, but believe me when I say that it's not your usual thriller, and I think it's perfectly done (and again, I barely say that).

You want to be scared? Read this. You want some romance? Read this. You want to wonder what's going to happen next, think that you're right, then see that you're actually not? Read this.

You want a happy ending? Well, that depends on what your version of a "happy ending is", but still, read this. *insert evil laughter here*

Anyway, in summation, THE GOOD GIRL is one of the best books I've read in recent weeks. It's fresh, it's great, and it will stir up a well of emotions in you (and make your twisted brain as happy and satisfied as can be)

Also, I think this song is perfect for the book, too. This is Paramore's "Last Hope".
